The Autoworld Museum in Brussels is one of Europe’s most important museums dedicated to the history and development of transportation and the automobile. The route through the site traces the history of the motor car with a chronological journey through vehicles built and developed from the late nineteenth century to the 1990s. From animal-drawn carriages to petrol-powered vehicles, through pedal-powered transport and on to the earliest electric cars. It’s a visit that allows you to understand how the evolution of private transport unfolded in European society across different historical periods.
In total, more than three hundred models are on display, including carriages, motorcycles and automobiles manufactured both in Europe and the United States. Many of the vehicles on show come from the private collections of royalty and wealthy families. Starting from the Belle Époque, the museum explores the changes and progress that took place in the early twentieth century and during the war years. Completing the visit are period documents, photographs and films, together with reconstructions of the most important discoveries and significant moments in motoring history, always highlighting the evolution of both technology and design.
Among the most noteworthy cars on display are several limousines that belonged to the Belgian royal household, some sports cars and various racing models. Beyond the permanent collection, Autoworld frequently organises temporary exhibitions featuring special collections, vintage car displays, rallies and events related to the world of motoring.
