Among Belgium’s most beautiful and popular tourist areas, Flanders, the northern part of the country, is scattered with ancient and picturesque towns.

Medieval squares, belfry towers, tree-lined canals, magnificent townhouse facades, world-renowned museums, welcoming cafés, béguinages and cathedrals make the towns of the Flanders region veritable masterpieces of medieval architecture. The region’s agricultural landscape is dominated by hop cultivation, the essential ingredient that goes into creating exceptional Belgian beers.

In the western part of Flanders lie the canal-side queens, the famous towns of Bruges and Ghent, though lesser-known gems like Veurne, Damme, Ypres and Diksmuide are equally charming.

In the eastern part of Flanders you’ll find the dynamic Antwerp, an important diamond trading hub, Mechelen, the delightful Lier, Turnhout, Diest and the vibrant Louvain. Hoegaarden is famous for its white beer, whilst Hasselt is renowned for Flemish gin, genever.

Stretching just 67 kilometres, Belgium’s coast extends between France and the Netherlands. Though often characterised by high-rises and modern developments, this part of Belgium has its own charm.

The most popular coastal resorts, particularly busy during summer, are De Panne, Koksijde, Ostend and De Haan.

Beyond walking among the dunes or cycling within nature reserves, Belgium’s coast is ideal for children’s activities, surfing and horse riding.

Flanders by bicycle

One of the best ways to take in Flanders’ wonderful countryside is by bicycle.

An excellent network of cycle paths criss-crosses Belgian territory, particularly throughout Flanders, passing stunning castles, important medieval cities, churches, museums and picturesque villages. Woods, hills, canals and rivers will be the romantic companions of your journey.

Numerous hotels, campsites and youth hostels cater specifically to cycling tourists, marked with the bicycle-friendly label. These establishments are located no more than 5 kilometres from cycle routes and, in addition to comfortable beds, offer secure bike storage, repair kits, maps and bike rental.
