Nestled between France, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands, Belgium is a small nation in north-western Europe.
With only 60 kilometres of coastline, the Belgian coast is washed by the North Sea. Belgium is generally flat, except for the hilly, wooded Ardennes region in the east. Its territory is crossed by three major rivers – the Scheldt, the Meuse and the Yser – and numerous artificial waterways that have been used for trade for centuries.
The country, a crossroads of Europe, is divided into three regions: the French-speaking south, Wallonia; the Flemish-speaking north, Flanders; and, between the two, the capital region of Brussels.
Belgium’s highest point is Signal de Botrange, located in the eastern part of the country, which reaches 694 metres above sea level.
