The wonderful city of Mons, known as Bergen in Dutch, lies not far from Charleroi and is, together with the city of Plzeň, European Capital of Culture for 2015.
The spectacular medieval historic centre develops around the magnificent Grand Place, overlooking which stands the imposing Gothic building of the Hôtel de Ville dating from the 15th century. In front of the palace stands a statue of a monkey, which local tradition holds brings good fortune to those who stroke its head.
The Belfry of Mons dates from the 17th century and is the only bell tower in Belgium constructed in Baroque style: standing 87 metres tall, the structure boasts a carillon with 49 bells and dominates the city from the top of a hill.
Of particular note is the Collégiale Sainte-Waudru, a Brabantine Gothic church that was never completed.
History enthusiasts will be captivated by the War Museum focusing on Mons’s role in both world wars, whilst porcelain lovers cannot miss the Musée du Vieux Nimy.
Mons is located approximately 70 kilometres southwest of Brussels.
