Often called the Pearl of the Ardennes, Spa is Europe’s oldest spa town, so much so that its name is commonly used to describe thermal baths. Its curative thermal waters have been known since the 14th century.
The historic centre of this picturesque town boasts splendid neoclassical buildings: these include the thermal establishments from 1862, exhibition halls and a casino, the world’s first, built from 1763 onwards. The Eglise Saint Remacle, constructed in 1885, also follows neoromanesque styles.
Les Thermes de Spa have recently been refurbished and feature almost 9,000 square metres of pools with water heated to 90 degrees sourced from the Clementine spring, which is rich in minerals.
The unusual Laundry Museum spans 25 rooms and traces the evolution of washing techniques from antiquity to the present day.
Spa is located approximately 35 kilometres south-east of Liège, within a wooded valley surrounded by hills, rivers and springs.
